Benzophenone
Not a permitted sunscreen active. It can form when octocrylene degrades. IARC Group 2B. TGA wants it capped as an impurity.
Benzophenone is not an allowed UV filter in Australia, the EU or the US. It is listed here because people confuse it with oxybenzone (benzophenone-3) and because it can appear as a degradant in octocrylene products stored hot.
IARC classifies benzophenone as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). TGA reviewed it separately from the seven actives and is proposing a limit in finished therapeutic sunscreens. The EU also requires it to remain at trace levels.
This is impurity control for octocrylene formulas, not a reason to treat octocrylene or oxybenzone as proven human carcinogens.
