Mexoryl 400
Long-UVA1 filter with a peak near 385 nm. Australia and the EU allow 3%. Keep nitrosamines very low; not for inhalable sprays.
This merocyanine, sold as Mexoryl 400, is unusual because its absorption extends toward 400 nm (peak about 385 nm). Most older filters weaken in that long-UVA1 band, which matters for pigmentation and photoageing.
SCCS concluded 3% is safe for dermal use. The EU and TGA both list 3%. It must not be used in applications that can reach the lungs. It is a secondary amine, so formulas must avoid nitrosating agents and keep nitrosamines below 50 ppb.
Inhalation safety was not established. Otherwise the parent filter looks like a useful modern UVA1 option, mainly in L’Oréal-family products so far.
