Sulisobenzone
Water-soluble UVB/UVA2 benzophenone. Australia allows 10%; the EU allows 5% as acid after a 2024 SCCS re-clear. Not oxybenzone. Rare as a primary AU sunscreen active.
Sulisobenzone is benzophenone-4, a water-soluble UVB and short-UVA filter. Australia allows 10% in listed therapeutic sunscreens. The EU allows 5% as acid; SCCS reassessed it for endocrine activity in 2024 and still accepted 5%. Benzophenone-5 is the sodium salt and is read across at the same cap.
It is not oxybenzone (BP-3) and it is not benzophenone the degradant. FDA still lists sulisobenzone among filters needing more GRASE data.
It is used more often to protect cosmetic products themselves from light than as the main SPF engine of a sunscreen.
